ELECTRIFICATION

There IS a path away from the use of fossil fuels in our homes. Called "electrification," it's the way to go when it comes to fast-tracking decarbonization and embracing renewable energy.

What is Electrification?

Consumer energy technologies can be split into two basic types: those that directly combust fuels (oil, gasoline, natural gas, and biomass) and those that run on electricity, AKA anything that has a battery or plugs in. Currently, 13 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in the US come from commercial and residential buildings. More specifically, they come from fossil fuels used for heating our homes and water and for cooking.

Enter electrification, defined by Resources for the Future as “the process of replacing technologies that use fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas) with technologies that use electricity as a source of energy.”

RENEWABLE ENERGY

Installing solar panels will not only reduce your carbon emissions but will also reduce your energy bills.

The Electrification Imperative

In addition to accelerating the move to renewable energy in our homes, electrification serves another vital purpose: It will spur the rapid expansion and automation of power grids — which will further accelerate the transition to electricity.

In fact, because of electrification’s profound potential to reverse the damage we’ve done and help us move forward, New Jersey’s recently adopted Energy Master Plan sets forth the decarbonization and electrification of buildings — including expanding its net zero carbon homes incentives programs — as one of its key strategies.

Our imperiled planet is currently facing a daunting problem. In the race to get to zero carbon emissions, climate and energy experts alike agree: Electrification is the answer.

The 411 on Electrifying Your Home

Just as we can significantly reduce carbon emissions from cars by moving away from technologies that rely on combustion, the same potential exists when we make the same shift from fossil fuels to electricity in our homes.

While electrifying your home may sound complicated, there are some simple things you can do to move in the right direction, such as trading out your furnace for a heat pump, using an electric dryer (or a clothesline) to dry your clothes, and switching to an induction cooktop.

Have a bigger budget or want to take an even bigger step in the direction of clean energy? Installing solar panels will not only reduce your carbon emissions but will also reduce your energy bills while increasing your home’s value.
